Grandpa Brooks recently sent this email to our family and I thought I would share it! I have repeatedly heard from my family that I have a lot of my grandpa's insight and intelligence... I just adore his emails and his inquisitive nature. His email was in response to reading recent blog posts and determining that my new nickname should be "Thoroughly Modern Mandy." I agree it has quite the ring to it:)
"..... this suggestion was inspired by the combination of
• my checking out Mandy's blog again this morning
• my recollection of a 1967 musical comedy film title Thoroughly Modern Millie which starred Julie Andrews as Millie, James Fox, Mary Tyler Moore, John Gavin, Carol Channing, Beatrice Lille, Pat Morita and Jack Soo which received numerous acclamations,
including
• a Writers Guild of America award of Best American Musical for screenplay author Richard Morris
• seven Academy nomination awards
• five Golden Globe nomination awards
• an Academy Award for Original Music Score for Composer Elmer Bernstein
• a Golden Glove Best Supporting Actress Award for Carol Channing
..... it featured songs which were popular in the 1910's and 1920's
..... cultural terms,
• the 1910's attained fame as the age in which jazz music blossomed
• the 1920's attained fame as the Roaring Twenties, during which the term "flapper" was created to refer to the class of young women who redefined modern womanhood as a "new breed" of young women who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened
to the new jazz music and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered by society in general to be acceptable behavior for women by wearing excessive makeup, drinking, smoking, driving automobiles, and in general ignoring social and sexual norms as a manifestation of their new found personal freedom, which often led to wanton behavior which degraded human decency ..... the life of Millie (Julie Andrews) was intertwined with the general turmoil of the Roaring Twenties
..... it was so popular that it was followed by a Tony Award winning Broadway stage play which opened in 2000
..... I believe this suggestion is in order because I visualize Mandy as leader in defining new version of modern womanhood which focuses on utilizing the skills of women of all ages to benefit society in general in a number of ways never previously conceived possible by anyone, as a twenty first century version of the Roaring Twenties Millie"
