36 Week Appointment

It is unbelievable to comprehend that I have begun my weekly OB/GYN appointments. This milestone makes us markedly closer to Lydia's impending arrival! The appointment was relatively short and sweet, but did include two new experiences: The Group B Strep Test and my first "internal" exam. The Group B Strep test is a routine test in which the doctor collects a few cultures to determine if the GBS exists. For my preggo friends, this was not the most enjoyable test, but was quick and painless. I should get my results in the next couple days. Babycenter.com says,

"The group B streptococcus (GBS) bacteria is usually harmless in healthy adults, but it can cause a relatively rare but very serious infection in newborns. (Group B is different from group A strep, the bacteria that causes strep throat.)Between 10 and 30 percent of pregnant women carry GBS bacteria in the vagina or rectal area, where they may pass it to their babies during labor or birth. With proper prenatal testing and treatment during labor, though, the risk is small."

I was most interested in what the internal exam would divulge in terms of my progress in dilation. At 36 weeks, I am 1 cm dilated with "a little wiggle room towards 2." This is rather insignificant seeing as how I can stay at 1 cm for weeks, but as a first time mom, I am excited to hear that we are moving in the right direction to meeting our little bundle of joy. Dr. Luan was able to feel Lydia's head to ensure she is in the proper position for birth. At this point, it is unlikely she will turn, so it looks like we don't have to worry about her being in a breech presentation! I am still measuring ahead at 37 weeks. That being said, a full-term baby is considered so at 37 weeks, so we could meet her at anytime between now and August! The doctor didn't indicate if he thought I would progress towards labor anytime soon. I do have another appointment on Tuesday to check my progress again.
