Communication Junction

When Lydia was about six months old, we were introduced to Baby Signing Time through Abbey Cook. At that point, we had found Abbey's card at Butcher Block in Junction City and on a whim, opted to call and enroll in an introductory signing class. Abbey is a speech language pathologist that is owner of Communication Junction. As Communication Junction's website states,

"Communication Junction offers a variety of private and group classes created to improve communication with children and families. We believe sign language promotes early communication, reduces frustration and tantrums, improves reading skills, and may even increase IQ."

Over time, we introduced Lydia to the DVDs, books and flashcards as a means to facilitate early communication with her. We have been beyond thrilled at her ability to use sign to communicate with us and are so appreciative of Abbey for introducing it to us.

In addition to her regular schedule of classes that engage infants, toddlers, and children in sign language, Abbey is hosting a series of signing classes geared at Nursery Rhymes and Sing-a-Longs. She also hosts various special events at the zoo, farm park, and other local attractions to teach sign language in the context of the environment kids are in. Lydia is currently enrolled in Nursery Rhyme Sign and Play class. Abbey does a wonderful job of introducing new signs, differentiating instruction to her students of various ages and abilities, and reinforcing early literacy skills through this class.

Lydia and her classmates are shocked that "Old Mother's Cupboard" is bare. Where did the bones go?

Abbey also conducts story times in conjunction with Library Story Hours, at the Riverfront Market, and various other local events. She is truly passionate about engaging families in sign language to increase communication in all children.

We are so thrilled that Communication Junction is bringing Rachel Coleman of Baby Signing Time/The Signing Time Foundation to Peoria on August 13th. A concert will be performed by Rachel at the Dingledine Center at Bradley. Lydia is ready to go with a new T-Shirt to commemorate the event.
