Baby Food Recipe #5: Apple Puree

Apples were very similar to the pear puree. There were several suggestions for the types of apples to use and to avoid. Red delicious and Gala apples were amongst the apples recommended for babies because they do not cause as much gas and because they are not as tart as some of the other apples. I started with 6 apples, my awesome steam pot, and my apple corer/slicer. The book said to quarter and core the apples, but I used my apple slicer. In hindsight, quartering the apples would have reduced the amount of time I spent peeling apples after they were steamed.

Add one inch of water and bring to a boil in the pot. Add the steamer basket and cover tightly. I cooked the apples for 10 minutes.

The apples came out a little shriveled, but soft. Cooking them with their skins on preserves the nutrients in the apple. At this point, I had to 'skin' the flesh from the apples.
I placed the skinned apples in the processor and added a little of the reserve water from the pot. I would estimate that I only added about 1/4 cup of liquid to the apples. I always add a little at a time until I feel it is at a consistency that Lydia can handle.

All in all, the applesauce turned out well. It is important to note that there will be some discoloration of the applesauce and that is normal. I was able to make 8 servings of applesauce for Lydia for the price of 6 apples. Overall, I enjoyed the recipe, but making applesauce was not amongst my favorite to do.
