37 Week Appointment

Brett and I had our 37 week OB appointment this afternoon. It was fairly uneventful. Dr. Luan did an internal exam and concluded that everything is "looking favorable" for delivery... To translate that, he said that my cervix is softening and that I am 2 cm dilated. Lydia's positioning is good, her heart rate is strong, and my blood pressure continues to be good. We have our next appointment on Wednesday, July 29th.

We did ask Dr. Luan if he thought I would make it to my 40 week due date. He brought up induction at 39 weeks as an option. I probably would not choose to be induced as I don't think medical intervention for our convenience is appropriate. I would only consider induction if I was post term or if it was in the best interest of Lydia for medical reasons. Dr. Luan agreed that it was a good decision.
Now we find ourselves just waiting for Lydia to arrive.

I have felt some sporadic contractions and an increase in Braxton Hicks contractions over the past couple days. I have found myself making sure little things are done for her arrival. I panicked yesterday that I didn't have a soothing toy for her and went out at 8pm to buy the Fisher Price Soothing Glow Sea Horse. I have to admit that the glow worm from my childhood is much cooler, but Lydia seemed to like the Sea Horse. When I got home I played the music from the Sea Horse next to my belly. She kicked and moved around in response to the gentle music. I placed it in her bassinet, but plan on playing the music for her each night before I go to bed so she will recognize it when she arrives. From everything I have read, babies are capable of hearing and recognizing music, sound, and voices from inside the womb... I think that is pretty remarkable.

After I went to Toys 'R' Us to get the Sea Horse, I ran by Target to by Allison's baby shower gift. I have to prepare myself for these trips because, as many of you know, Target is by far one
of my favorite places. Needless to say, shopping for other babies naturally induces the need to shop for your own baby. So, as I was buying her shower gift, I also found some great deals on items for Lydia that eased my concern that I am neglecting my baby by not purchasing items that will activate her sensory awareness. Therefore, after choosing a few dresses from the clearance rack for next summer, I found the Fisher Price Waterfall Soother for her crib! I have chosen not to purchase a mobile due to some of my research on the practicality and usability of the mobiles. Also, mobiles are only recommended to be used until the baby starts rolling over and standing up. Therefore, the Waterfall Soother satisfies my motherly instinct that Lydia needs something in her crib to entertain and soothe her to sleep. I also purchased some additional Medela bottles that will be used in conjunction with my dairy milking machine and some cute toys that Allison registered for that I thought Lydia needed as well:) After my trip to Target, I felt like a much better mother... :)

Yesterday I also put together Lydia's new bookshelf that will house all her books and some toys. She already has a great library of books thanks to some Wilder Waite teachers, my Aunt Linda, and Grandma Joan and Oma Neesie! I love reading to my belly and hope Lydia will enjoy having story time when she gets here! The bookshelf fit perfectly in the space I had envisioned it to go. I just have to raise the mirror above it a little bit because the shelf was a little taller than I had thought.

Today's major project is to put together the portable swing that Erin gave us for my shower. I am leaving the Jump-A-Roo to Gary (Opa Gary) to put together when he visits next as Lydia won't need that right away, but I have a feeling she will want the swing earlier. We already put together the full sized swing and I will move that to the main level of the house for Lydia to use when we have visitors or are relaxing downstairs. I will use the portable Boppy Swing upstairs for if she gets fussy or wants to swing before bedtime. The swing will also be nice to use when we go on trips. Dr. and Kathy Anderson gave Gary and Denise a Jump-A-Roo and swing, so it will be nice to not need to transport those supplies when we go back to Iowa for visits.

I do have one more baby shower before Lydia's Due Date. Brett's co-workers at AdCo are throwing us a shower next week! We are so blessed to be supported and surrounded by great people here in Peoria!
